The Big Buyers working group on circular construction meets to discuss circular asphalt

In October 2021, as part of a series of meetings held in preparation to market dialogue planned for Spring 2022, members of the working group on circular construction met to discuss case studies of the application of circular asphalt in a number of European cities. The meeting provided participants with a better understanding of the benefits of using circular materials in the construction sector as well as with an overview of solutions, procurement standards, and practicalities of improving sustainability of road construction and refurbishment of bicycle lanes.

Presenters included Jeroen van Alphen, Project Leader Sustainable Public Procurement at Rijkswaterstaat, José Luis Díez, Director of Public Affairs and Communications at ERF and Wim Beelen, Senior Advisor Healthy Urbaj Living and Coordinator Utrecht Circulair, and Merel Limbeek, Advisor European Subsidies.

What case studies were discussed?

  • Almere motorway project coordinated by Rijkswaterstaat – the executive agency of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment (presentation by Jeroen van Alphen, Project Leader Sustainable Public Procurement at Rijkswaterstaat).
  • ALTERPAVE project, which aims to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of different combinations of sustainable asphalt mixes that will replace virgin materials by recycled and renewable alternatives (presentation by José Luis Díez, Director of Public Affairs and Communications at ERF).
  • Utrecht’s Cremerstraat bike lane (presentation by Wim Beelen, Senior Advisor Healthy Urbaj Living and Coordinator Utrecht Circulair, and Merel Limbeek, Advisor European Subsidies).
